Ms. Deborah Moss, Chair and Founder, initiated the Avālence R&D efforts and the corporate formation in 2002. Prior to founding Avālence, Ms. Moss led operations and sales of two industrial gas companies GEECO and EHE, and she serves on the Board of both companies. Ms. Moss is co-founder of E Magazine, an award-winning national environmental magazine, and serves on its Board of Directors. She also serves as an Advisory Board Member of the Connecticut Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and is a member of the Connecticut Small Business Advisory Board. Ms. Moss also represents Avālence as a Board member of the Connecticut Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Coalition.

In 2008 Ms. Moss won the Entrepreneurial Innovation and Leadership Award for Women in Science and Technology from the Connecticut Technology Council.

Ms. Moss received her B.A. from Smith College in 1981, and in 1982 she back-packed solo around the world, visiting 23 countries in 18 months.

Mr. Thomas Jackson has been producing stand-alone electrolysis systems for nearly four decades and is the primary innovator of the Avālence Hydrofiller system.

A graduate of Drexel University, Mr. Jackson concentrated in Power Systems, and earned induction into two honor societies. He initially began work on uni-polar electrolytic hydrogen plants in the 1960s while working at one of Avālence’s founding companies, Electric Heating Equipment Company.

Mr. Jackson served on Drexel University's staff as an academic advisor and counselor for 13 years and is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, and the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  Mr. Jackson is a member of the Connecticut Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Coalition and serves on the transportation subcommittee.

Mr. Martin A. Shimko Executive Director and Co-Founder, has an extensive background in research and product development in the fields of mechanical, thermal, and energy systems, built from over 25 years of experience. He spent 14 years with Creare Inc. where he sold, managed, and successfully completed several multi-million dollar development programs involving NASA and the Department of Defense. He has also evaluated safety systems for nuclear power plants, developed pyrolysis waste treatment systems, and provided other thermal analysis functions for firms in California and Massachusetts.

Mr. Shimko is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honorary society; he received his Masters Degree from MIT and his B.S.M.E. from the University of California, Davis.

Mr. Anthony Della Volpe, CEO and President, brings 15 years experience focused on profit growth, asset management and corporate development with key management experience leading operations of firms from $7 million to $400 million annual revenues. After receiving his B.A in accounting from the Ancell School of Western Connecticut State University (C.P.A.), Mr. Della Volpe started his career at a regional accounting firm, and then joined a public recycling equipment manufacture and design firm Tomra Systems ASA, rising to Controller/Treasurer/CFO/EVP.  Mr. Della Volpe has also held venture finance and CEO positions at various technology and consumer enterprises.

Mr. Paul M. Dunn CTO, COO, came to Avālence after a long career with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), where he rose to the Senior Executive Service position of Product Area Director, Undersea Warfare (USW) Weapons and Vehicle Systems, and in 2007 was assigned the additional duties of NAVSEA Undersea Executive.

Mr. Dunn brings a broad technical background, systems engineering capability, and innovation to Avālence. He has over 30 patent disclosures, including one on hydrogen generation, and numerous awards to his credit, and has a goal of improvement in performance and expansion of Avālence. Mr. Dunn attended Tufts University College of Engineering and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his Master of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island in 1994.
