Hartford, CT - Avālence, LLC has been contracted to provide a Hydrofiller hydrogen fueling station that will fuel 6 UTC fuel cell buses housed at the Leibert Road headquarters of CT Transit in Hartford. The on-site hydrogen producer will supply fuel to extend fuel cell bus routes and enable 7 day/week fuel cell bus service. Construction on the station is scheduled to begin this summer, and is part of a $26.8 million ARRA (American Recovery Act) Clean Cities funded program.
Lee Grannis of Bethany, CT heads the Greater New Haven Clean Cities program that led the initiative to coordinate this ambitious AFV (Alternative Fuel Vehicles) program, the largest ever in the state of Connecticut. Says Grannis, “Over the next two years we will install 10 alternative fueling stations statewide that are the most advanced clean fuel technologies available today. These stations will provide an wide variety of clean fuels for a total of 204 AFVs that will operate throughout the state. We will be closely tracking the displacement in fossil fuels and the reduction in emissions as these vehicles hit the road.” The new fueling stations will support 181 CNG (compressed natural gas) and LNG (liquid natural gas) fleet vehicles, 8 heavy duty (LNG) refuse trucks, 7 electric vehicles, 6 public transit hydrogen fuel cell buses, and multiple biodiesel light duty vehicles.
Many high technology jobs are being created as a result of this program. At Avālence, efforts are underway to recruit several engineers and technicians to support construction of the 30 kg/day hydrogen fueling station for Hartford, and follow-on training and data collection efforts. The company is also undertaking certification of the Hydrofiller that will facilitate sales of the product line globally within the next few years. “A lot of things are coming together that allow us to scale up the company,” says CEO Deborah Moss, “at both the technology and the business level”. Avālence is developing a large scale Hydrofiller to supply 300 kg/day of compressed hydrogen (enough to fuel 10 fuel cell buses or 60+ fuel cell passenger vehicles daily) that is designed to couple with renewable power sources for energy storage and production of green hydrogen fuel.
Carla York, CEO of Innovation Drive is administering the DOE-sponsored program in Connecticut, which engages over 30 project partners including non-profit organizations, state and local governments, private fleets and private enterprises, and several small businesses for the largest deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure in the state. “A lot of people have worked very hard for a very long time to bring this about for in Connecticut, one of a handful of states leading the nation in the use of advanced technology vehicles and clean fuels to reduce U.S. dependence on imported petroleum, increase fuel economy and improve emissions.”

Wiscasset, ME - Governor John Baldacci
this week joined Congressman Mike Michaud, representatives of
the other Maine Congressional Delegation offices, and leaders
of Maine’s energy
and technology industries for the activation of the Chewonki Renewable
Hydrogen Project. The hydrogen is produced by an Avālence
Hydrofiller 15 installed at Chewonki’s award-winning Environmental
Education Campus located on a 400-acre peninsula in mid coast
Maine. The Chewonki project is the first complete hydrogen energy
system in Maine. The Governor said that he hopes further renewable
hydrogen projects will be forthcoming in the state.
Governor Balducci signed an Executive Order to Further Expand Hydrogen Efforts in Maine. “Creating a more sustainable energy future for Maine has been a top priority of my Administration,” said Governor Baldacci. “Some of Maine’s greatest economic assets are the vast renewable energy resources we have right here at home. Using these clean resources to create hydrogen, which can be used as a fuel in the transportation sector directly or to power fuel cells that can provide energy for buildings, industry and transportation represents a giant step forward in solving the huge energy and environmental challenges facing us.”
The Chewonki project is a collaborative effort of the Hydrogen Energy Center, Chewonki, the Maine Technology Institute and private donors.
The project unveiled today is designed to enable Maine people
who visit to Chewonki to learn more
about hydrogen energy and
its role in the state’s energy future. The facility will
also demonstrate use of environmental technologies to education
institutions, research laboratories, and other organizations.
To further expand such opportunities in Maine, the Governor created by Executive Order a partnership to accelerate commercially viable hydrogen production and fuel cells.
“Hydrogen represents a huge growth industry, and the creation of this Partnership will put Maine on the leading edge as this industry expands,” said the Governor. According to the Governor’s office, PriceWaterhouseCoopers projects that global demand for all fuel cell products will reach $46 billion per year by 2011 and will grow to more than $2.5 trillion per year in 2021.
“To expedite the transition to the hydrogen energy future I am signing today this Executive Order to create the Maine Hydrogen Energy Fuel Cell Partnership,” continued the Governor. “The Partnership will speed the development and deployment of commercially viable hydrogen production, storage and distribution technologies; analyze opportunities to leverage federal research and development funds and other funding sources; and stimulate development of private firms that will build energy and fuel cell technology products at facilities located in Maine. This is an important step in moving Maine further down the path of energy independence and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.”
Fuel Cell Today - Public transportation will have a cleaner, more efficient and user-friendly future thanks to a project recently announced in New Haven. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds flowing to the Greater New Haven Transit District (GNHTD) could prove to be tremendous boon to the city of New Haven, the state of Connecticut and to public transportation nation-wide.
Just days after the US Congress passed an extensive and comprehensive energy bill that would provide funding for many energy related improvements in the coming years, Donna Carter, Executive Director of GNHTD awarded its Advanced Transportation System Development Program to an Integrated Product Development (IPD) Team led by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) of Des Plaines, IL. The project is part of the National Hydrogen Initiative administered by the FTA. Ms. Carter stated, “This concept is a complete Advanced Transportation System ‘solutions package’ for hydrogen-powered transit operations unlike any undertaken previously. The GNHTD, the FTA and Connecticut Congressional Delegation have long had a vision for bringing a new approach to transit to life. Such a concept has never been explored in this manner until now, and we are excited to see it finally under way. GNHTD is proud to be a part of expanding and diversifying the nation’s energy technology to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.”
This award is for Phase I of the projected multi-year program, which aims to simultaneously design, and deliver two hydrogen fueled hybrid-electric transit vehicles, and two on-site hydrogen production, storage and dispensing systems, as well as the design and implementation of innovative diagnostic, maintenance and training platforms for the vehicles and fueling systems. The most advanced technologies will be used in the production of the new type of transit vehicle, including electric drives, battery technologies, fuel cells, high pressure tanks, composites and wireless communications. Ultimately the project will also encompass the design and construction of a new, state-of-the-art transit facility for GNHTD.
According to Lou Lautman of Gas Technology Institute (Team Leader of the project), this Advanced Transportation System is based on two hydrogen fueled battery dominant, hybrid-electric transit vehicles, the first of which will be powered by a fuel cell, the second by an internal combustion engine. The vehicles in this program will be supported by two state-of-the-art hydrogen generation and fueling systems, one utilizing a natural gas-based reformation technique and one a compressor-less electrolysis technology.
The project Team includes GTI as the lead Project Integrator and hydrogen reformation system developer, MES (with Sabre Engineering and CompositeTek) as the vehicle developer/builder, Hydrogenics as the fuel cell supplier, Connecticut-based Avālence as the electrolytic hydrogen system developer and installer of the renewable power supply, and Innovation Drive, to manage the marketing and public awareness, as well as team coordination, reporting and commercialization aspects of the program.
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today announced a federal grant in the amount of $749,465 from the U.S. Department of Energy for Avālence, LLC of Milford. The funding will support research on hydrogen technology.
